How to get your board game manufacturing-ready

Short answer: CMYK color, a real bleed margin, print resolution, and dimensions checked against an actual product size, not a screen. Every one of those is invisible on your monitor and expensive to discover after a print run.

What does "manufacturing-ready" actually mean?

A file built to the exact specs a manufacturer's printing and cutting equipment requires: the right color mode (CMYK, not RGB), a bleed margin around every edge that gets trimmed, resolution high enough that print doesn't look soft, and dimensions that match a real product size, not a rough guess. A file that looks perfect on your screen can still fail every one of these.

Why do designers get this wrong so often?

Most game design happens in tools built for screens, not print. Screens display in RGB, printers use CMYK, and colors shift when you convert between them if you design in the wrong mode from the start. Screens have no concept of bleed or trim, so a background that looks fine on a monitor can leave a visible white sliver at the edge of a physical card once it's cut.

What actually happens when a file isn't manufacturer-ready?

One of three things, and none of them are free. The manufacturer's own team fixes it and you get a bill for prepress work you didn't expect. The manufacturer sends it back and your production timeline slips while you fix it yourself. Or worst case, nobody catches it, and you pay for a full print run of components with a visible defect.

What's the single most common mistake?

Designing without bleed. A card, box, or board printed without extra margin around the artwork risks a thin white line at the trimmed edge, because cutting is never perfectly precise. The fix is simple, extend your background and artwork past the edge of the design (a standard bleed margin is 1/8 inch, 3mm), but it has to be built in from the start, not patched on afterward.
